Serious claims belong in a serious scientific paper (guardian.co.uk)

When I read this article

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/oct/21/bad-science-publishing-claims

I couldn’t agree more and it is not the first claim from the Baroness which gets the media machinery buzzing with wild claims completely unfounded…

The blanket statement is not at all useful either as there is a growing amount of evidence that certain game mechanics, when implemented appropriately could be used for learning (or motivate to learn).

Like for all things used in moderation, videogames could be a great tool for learning. I’ve learnt my first english by playing games such as The secret of Monkey Island on PC and Defenders of the Crown or Leisure suits Larry on the Amiga. 20 years later I’m here with a PhD from a British University! I can reassure you that this is not thanks to my teacher at school at the time…

Revealed – the capitalist network (newscientist.com)

Where visualisation confirms reality… most interestingly, why of the top 50 nobody is actually producing stuff? Maybe I’m the wrong business, but I can’t fail to get annoyed knowing who’s playing with people’s money! When even governments seem to be incapable of regulating these players and even trying to please them, one might need to ask: what if every single one of us was going to withdraw all their money from banks for a couple of weeks?

I’m pretty sure that lack of liquidity is going to make them re-think their game!

Kobo launches Vox, ‘the first … (thenextweb.com)

When I came across this news I couldn’t resist to grin. In the last F8 Mark Zuckeberg seemed like a child learning to put verbs into his language repertoire. I thought that the partnership with Spotify is great as adding a social dimension to music listening is a masterful implementation of a jukebox on the net, but sharing book reading? At least in a book club people make the conscious decision to share the experience of reading a book. sometimes it is good, sometimes it is rubbish. But why would I want to let the world know what kind of trashy books (or mostly tech manuals) I am currently reading?

I’m curious to see how successful this is going to be!
